Tinkering with Canva AI Image Creation for Technical Communication Journal Cover Art

, ,

I came across a post on LinkedIn from a former grad school colleague, Philip Gallagher, with a call for submissions of cover illustrations for the Society of Technical Communicators (STC) Technical Communication journal.

The theme was, “illustrations on New Horizons in Technical Communication,” which immediately led me to think AI was the only type of cover illustrations. We are talking about “new horizons” after all.

Canva, along with every other company in the content creation game, released Magic Design to enhance the design experience. So, I took the prompt from the call for submissions and put that into Canva’s magic image creator. I must say, I like what it delivered.

What do you think? Do any of these images capture the prompt for the new STC issue? I didn’t end up submitting any and missed the deadline. I would lean towards this image of the people grouped together looking out to the horizons:

It will be interesting to see what illustration is chosen and if it was inspired by AI. I would argue that it should be an AI image as a meta statement on the new horizons of technical communication. AI and communication are going to be inextricably linked for the foreseeable future, so what better way to demonstrate that than by communicating with AI about your vision for an illustrative piece of cover art?
